Student Organizations

ICO offers a rich experience beyond the classroom and clinic. The college supports a variety of on-campus organizations, clubs and activities to contribute to the life of every student. Extracurricular life naturally extends into Chicago, a city renowned for its museums, music, theater, restaurants, sport teams, parks and nightlife. The Office of Student Affairs is responsible for supervising the activities of all student organizations.

Residential Complex (RC)

If you have questions about whether the RC is right for you, you could call the Office of Admissions/Student Affairs and talk with some of our work-study students who have or are currently residing in the RC. Previous RC residents have had very positive comments about their experience in the RC. The Resident Assistant Staff plan "get acquainted" activities early in the academic year as well as activities that will allow you to explore the dynamic city of Chicago throughout the year. As a First Year student, you are guaranteed double-room housing in the RC assuming all required documentation is submitted by the deadline. For your convenience, all RC housing contracts are for the 9-month academic year (as opposed to the typical 12-month apartment lease).

For more information on the Residential Complex, be sure to read the RC Brochure. For best viewing, we suggest that you save the file to your desktop and open it from there.

We all know that all work and no play makes Jack a dull (and stressed) optometry student. So, to keep your body as strong and healthy as your mind, ICO is pleased to offer you our well-equipped modern recreational facility. This facility features a full-sized gymnasium, racquetball courts, locker rooms, and a multipurpose fitness center. The fitness center features Stairmasters, treadmills, elliptical trainers, stationary bicycles (both computerized and spinning-style), a rowing machine, a Cybex Archtrainer, and a variety of strength training equipment.

To help you achieve your best form, ICO retains a full-time Fitness Coordinator, certified by the American Council on Exercise and Aerobics and Fitness Association of America. The Fitness Coordinator provides, free of charge, a variety of one-on-one fitness testing services. Fitness testing services include body composition testing (bioelectrical impedance method), cardiovascular endurance testing, muscular strength testing, muscular endurance testing, and flexibility testing.

The Fitness Coordinator also provides, free of charge, one-on-one training services. These include equipment orientation, individualized workout programs, supervised workouts, sports-specific training counseling, assistance with implementing programs designed by a physical or occupational therapist, and nutrition counseling.

Athletes can find a home at ICO. In conjunction with the Student Association, the ICO Fitness Center runs a variety of intramural sports. Recent intramural leagues have played flag football, basketball, volleyball, and softball. The ICO Fitness Center also provides equipment to student-organized sports groups including a volleyball group. Students wishing to start their own sports teams, whether for intramural or extramural play, can be sure that the Fitness Center will assist in any way possible.

Group exercise classes are available, free of charge, to all students. The class schedule runs throughout the academic year, and changes quarterly. Class formats may include dance classes, spinning, Yoga, circuit training, Pilates-based training, and running and walking programs.

The Fitness Coordinator also provides a variety of wellness programs, emphasizing the importance of developing healthy eating and exercise habits, disease prevention, and a spiritually nourishing approach towards physical health. With these goals in mind, the Fitness Coordinator offers a variety of health education programs, including: monthly bulletin boards focusing on different aspects of health; healthy snack breaks during final exam periods; health fairs; biweekly seated massage performed by a licensed massage therapist; a winter running incentive program; a regular wellness column in the student newsletter; free samples of healthy food and/or well-body products; and quarterly wellness incentive programs.
