Fitness & Wellness Services


We currently offer the following fitness services: body fat analysis, cardiovascular endurance analysis, equipment orientation, fitness assessment, flexibility analysis, general fitness consultation, sports-specific training analysis, strength and endurance analysis, and workout program design.  Other services available include general fitness consultation and equipment orientation.

Massage
Our Massage Therapist, Laurie, takes appointments on Tuesday from 11am-2pm by appointment only.  Sessions start at 10 minutes for just $10.  To book an appointment, please send your top 3 time choices and session length to fitness@ico.edu.

Fitness Coach
Discover the benefits of working with a Fitness Coach. From helping you with your workout plan to providing ongoing motivation and support, Fitness Coaches are dedicated to helping you achieve your specific fitness goals.  We currently have a small staff of Coaches here to help you with your exercise program.  Sessions are available on a first come first serve basis at no cost to students.  To schedule a session, send your request to fitness@ico.edu.

Exercise DVDs & Videos
Can’t make it to one of the group exercise classes?  The Fitness Department and the Library have joined forces to bring you even more fitness choices.  You can now find popular workouts like Pilates for Men, Crunch Kickbox Party, Red Hot Salsa, and lots more in the library.  Now anytime is the right time to get in shape physically and mentally.  See the Media Center in the library for information on checking out a dvd or vhs.   

Bulletin Boards
There are 4 fitness and wellness bulletin boards on campus.  There is a bulletin board located at the men’s and women’s locker rooms, outside of the Fitness Center, and outside of the gym.  The locker room bulletin boards contain information on gender specific health & wellness issues, while the board outside of the gym highlights group exercise & fit community events.  Articles, brochures, pamphlets, and other reference materials on a variety of health and wellness topics are available free of charge.

Cardio

Bootcamp: Keep yourself moving with alternating segments of exercise from jumping rope to pushups. Your body will be challenged!

Intro Step: A 30 minute progressive class geared towards beginners. Each week learn basic step moves with slow progression. 

Step: A non-stop cardio fat-burner consisting of choreographed combinations, athletic and dance, on and around the classic Step platform.

Boxing Combat: A circuit training class combining boxing & mitt work with intervals of sports conditioning moves guaranteed to work up a sweat. 

Indoor Cycle: Intense 30-45 minute workout taking you through a ride filled with hills & valleys. Maximum calorie burn for your time!  

 

Strength

Abs Blast:  Fifteen minutes of nothing but abs & lower back. Tone and strengthen your core from every angle!

Sculpt Blast: Get a total body strength workout in less than an hour using tools like the BOSU, bands, body bar and much more!

WOW (Women on Weights): Whether you are trying to lose weight or tone up, this program can help you get started. New participants accepted at the beginning of the month, pre-registration required, email fitness@ico.edu


Mind Body/Flexibility

Hatha Yoga: Combine posture and breath control in a series of asanas that are used to still the mind and boost energy.

Pilates Mat: Pilates uses breath work and slow executed movements to strengthen the core muscles—abdominals, glutes, lower back, and hip flexors. It also lengthens the spine, strengthens and elongates muscles, and increases body awareness and flexibility.  


Specialty Class

Bellydancing: The class format will cover basic belly dancing moves and use a building block format. Whether you want to learn a new dance style or get some great exercise this is the class for you!

Fitness Jobs

Assistant Personal Trainers, Group Exercise Instructors and Fitness Leaders are always needed. Training is provided for motivated students with a strong fitness/dance/sports background. Schedule is based on the needs of the department and the student’s schedule.

Fitness Attendants
- duties include ensuring the safety and order in the Fitness Center & Gym, tidying up all fitness areas, other tasks as assigned.  Only dependable students with a strong work ethic need apply.  The following shifts are currently available this Summer:

  • Mon 2-4pm
  • Sat 6-8pm, 8-10pm

How to Apply:  If interested, please send an email to srichards@ico.edu listing your fitness/sports/dance background, areas of interest, and why you would like to work in Fitness.  Preference will be given to students available over most breaks.

August 16th   – Universal Sole Burgers & Beer Fun Run Series

August 21st   – The Champions Run 10K

August 22nd   – Ride Like the Devil, II

Take this 25 mile history ride through the Gold Coast neighborhood. There will be stops along the way to learn about the 1893 World’s Fair and people of the era like H. H. August 28th   – Fleet Feet Sports Supersprint

Whether you are looking for speed or new to triathlons, this even is perfect. It has a 375-meter swim, a 10K bike, and a 2.5K run. It will take place at Foster Avenue Beach and is associated with both the Children’s Triathlon and the Chicago Triathlon Multi-sport Weekend. For more information see http://www.chicagosupersprint.com/.

September 6th   – 6th Annual Pullman Labor Day Ride

September 11th   – Chicago Lung Run

September 11th   – Big Shoulders Open Water Swim Classic

September 11th   – Big Shoulders Open Water Swim Classic

20th Annual BIG SHOULDERS Open Water Swim Classic presented by Chicago Masters Swim Club, the largest and oldest open water swim event in the Midwest. Wetsuits welcome, but scored separately. September 12th   – Dumpling Derby

If half marathons are not really your forte, check out this 17-mile eat and ride. You’ll stop at three local restraints for Indo-Pakistani, Polish, and Colombian food all in Chicago’s Edgewater neighborhood. The pace of this will be about 8-10 mph and will continue for roughly 2 hours. The ride starts at 11:00AM at Kitchen Sink Café (1107 W. September 13th   – Chicago Half Marathon and 5K

This year marks the 14th annual Chicago Half Marathon & 5K on Sunday, September 12, 2010. The event sold out at 20,000 participants last year, so don’t miss out this year. It is the fifth largest half marathon in the U.S and the 21st largest road race in the country! Both races start and finish in Jackson Park and run along the lakefront. There is a 13 minute mile requirement so start training! For more information go to http://www.chicagohalfmarathon.com/.

September 18th   – 5K Wolf Run/Walk

This race was the number 1 CARA Circuit Race 2001. The race site is located at the Wm. Powers Conservation Area at Wolf Lake on the southeast side of Chicago. The USATF-Certified course is one of the fastest, flattest, and most scenic courses in Chicago! The kids race is 1/4 Mile. Each registered child will receive a goodie bag, T-shirt, and medal upon completion of the race. Age divisions will be 3-5, 6-8, and 9-11.

The Family Walk has been incorporated into the 5K Event. Participants will start at the back of the 5K Field. No specific awards will be presented, but all registered participants will be eligible for the raffles. The post race party will have plenty of refreshments, entertainment, and great food. September 19th   – 6th Annual Sea Blue Prostate Cancer Walk/Run

September 19th   – CARA Ready to Run 20 Miler

Will you be ready? The 4th Annual CARA Ready to Run 20 Miler is the area's only fully supported 20 mile training run that helps runners prepare for the Bank of America Chicago Marathon and various other fall marathons. September 19th   – MMRF – Ann Landers Race for Research

September 25th   – Susan G Komen Race for the Cure

The Chicagoland Affiliate, established in 1997, is an active affiliate of the Komen Foundation. September 26th   – Caribbean Sounds 5K Walk/ 10K Race

This Caribbean theme event filled with soca music, themed mile markers, great prizes and a nice route is an awesome race. All level participants are encouraged to attend. October 3rd   – Bucktown 5K

The Bucktown 5K is a great way to add to the Chicago Marathon training. The race begins at 1621 West Wabansia. October 10th – Bank of America Chicago Marathon

October 16th – Men’s Health Urbanathlon & Festival

October 16th – Pumpkins in the Park 5K

October 17th – UOC Comer Kids Classic

October 30th – Chicago Lakefront 50/50

This three loop (50K) and four loop (50 Mile) USAT&F Certified course is flat and fast, all along the Chicago Bike Path. October 30th – UNO’s 4th Annual “Carrera De Los Muertos/ Race of the Dead” 5K run/walk

This is the only 5k that goes through both University Village and Pilsen.  Over 3000 runners join in on this race to celebrate the Day of the Dead. Costumes are always encouraged along with plenty of face painting. For more information on this fun run go to http://raceofthedead.com/


October 31st – Trick or Treat Trot

This 5K, 10K or 5K Addams Family Walk comes right on Halloween to bring in the spirit of the holiday. Along with the run comes a costume contest. The race has been going on since 1988 in the lakefront park at Montrose Avenue. Registration information and website to come!


November 6th – 15K/5K Hot Chocolate

Who doesn’t like CHOCOLATE at the end of a race!? This race grows in popularity tremendously each and every year. With your choice of either a 15K or 5K, participants get an amazing goodie bag and tons if Ghirardelli chocolate products at the post race party. This event definitely fills up quick, so register as soon as you can. For more information on this race, go to http://www.hotchocolate15k.com/


 

November 14th – SkyRise Chicago
