Optional Practical Training (OPT) is authorized temporary employment that allows the International Student (F-1 status) the opportunity to apply his/her “classroom knowledge” to a related job experience in the United States. OPT training is granted for a total of 12 months and a job offer is not required at the time of application. However, the OPT employment start date must fall within the 60 day grace period. In other words, OPT must be completed within a 14-month period following the completion of studies.
